Clean Development Mechanism-Seminar

The Royal Netherlands Embassy proudly commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Dutch-Malaysian diplomatic relations as Malaysia celebrates 50 years of independence.

Climate change is no longer a doubt. As we proceed into the 21st century, Malaysia and the Netherlands, as signatories to the Kyoto-Protocol, are very much concerned with the effects of global warming and climate change. Deep cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases are required to combat climate change. The Clean Development Mechanism or CDM has been actively promoted as a means for Annex 1 countries to engage other nations in carbon emissions reduction projects.

Recent CDM seminars have mainly promoted the business/commercial opportunities available through this mechanism. Few forums, if any, have discussed the issue of the CDM's effectiveness in meeting its primary objective of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, or have discussed the role of the CDM or other market-based instruments in a post-Kyoto regime. Which role should for instance the energy and financial sector play in this respect.

CETDEM - the Centre for Environment, Technology & Development, Malaysia - an independent, non-profit organisation that has been involved in improving environmental quality through the use of appropriate technology and sustainable development since 1985, together with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and with the support of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Malaysia is a one-day seminar on the CDM on 5th June 2007 to focus on this subject.

The objective of the seminar is to provide an opportunity for the Netherlands (an Industrialised/Annex1 Country) and Malaysia to share their experience on how effective the implementation of the CDM has been in Malaysia, and to foster dialogue among stakeholders, with a view of suggesting improvements for the CDM in a post-Kyoto framework.
